Heavy Metal Magazine: adult art into the mainstream
80
There are many milestones that young men reach in their lives. I can remember my very first sundae, my first bike ride, my first crayon drawing. As I got older, my interest changed. I can still remember the first playboy I accidently thumbed through, and how I loved the shape and beauty of a woman's body. In 1980, while playing with friends, one of them showed me his brothers "comic" book. It was called "Heavy Metal" magazine, and I was introduced into the world of ground breaking art.
Heavy Metal is an adult illustrated magazine highlighting artwork from graphic arts community. The magazine was founded in 1977 after publisher Leonard Mogul saw the French version. After it's debut, renowned artists began publishing their artwork and stories in the magazine. These artist included H.R. Giger, who designed the alien for the "Alien"movies starring Sigourney Weaver. He also designed the female alien in the move "Species." Other artist included Jean Giraud, whose artist moniker was "Moebius." He did the art and costume design for the movie the "Fifth Element." The stories and artwork often had themes that were dark, futuristic, and erotic. Several guest artists would debut their work in the magazine, and then ended up creating long running serials.
After the magazine debuted, Mogel felt that the magazine had too many illustrations and not enough stories. So he added experienced science fiction writer Ted White, who wrote for "Amazing Stories" and "Fantastic." He set right away to revamp the look, and added more American artist.
The magazine took a page out of Playboy magazine, and added columns to review various aspects of popular culture. Lou Stathis was the expert who reviewed rock music releases. Jay Kinney wrote about underground comics and their scene. Steve brown reviewed new science fiction novels. Bhob Stewart was the critic who reviewed animated science fiction films and media.
In 1981 a film was adapted from the long running articles and stories from the magazine. With a budget just under ten million dollars and finished in three years, the feature was released. The movie "Heavy Metal" (which I will review in another hub) featured several different segments, each done by a different animation group. There was one main story, but different scenes and side stories that added to illustrate the saga. The film had graphic illustrated nudity and violence, but was subdued compared to the work done in the magazine. Famous actors did the voice work in the movie, including John Candy, Eugene Levy, Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman.
The first film had moderate success, and became a cult classic. Another movie was made called "Heavy Metal 2000" which was an direct to video release. This feature was based on a graphic novel called "The Melting Pot," which was written by Kevin Eastman. Kevin Eastman used his ex-wife, Julie Strain, as the nude model for the main character in the movie. There are two video games that were created from the movie: Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. and Heavy Metal: geomatrix. Kevin Eastman, who currently owns the magazine, was the co-creator of "The teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
There are discussions to create another movie in 2012 called "Heavy Metal: Goliath." All fans of the magazine wait with bated breath.

Hi Augustine. I agree that the artwork is amazing...reminds me of those artists who arrived on the scene a little before your examples....Mouse is one in a genre of artists who featured more the psychedelic images; ethereal using mythical characters including Merlin, Avogadro (sp?), and relying, also, heavily on sexual enuendo and graphic images. The theme fit the times in which these artists expressed themselves entertwined with music...the mystical, magical, hallucinogenic, 'spacey' type music gave birth to fantasy like characters representative of that 'mind set,' just as Heavy Metal Mag. and artistry represents the more aggressive, primal aspect of our nature....interesting. Amazing talent throughout. You are a fine writer, Augustine. Interesting look through the eyes of a young man. Up Awesome Interesting
I bet you're absolutely right about my son. He no longer lives at home so I can't check his mattress. (smile)
Yes, the covers you showed did look amazing.
Very interesting read.
I never knew about this magazine. You write so interestingly that I will obviously check the website.
The art represented here is reminiscent of Boris Vallejo. Interesting Hub, though I am not familiar with the publication.
Augustine, you are right! If we don't use our talents, they do tend to dissipate. I used to draw quite a bit and, in the one art class I took I, too, was given A's for "an innate understanding of the feel and flow of the human body, musculature and proper dimensions." That's what he said! Now, I can't cross two lines without makig a mistake!! The one of my little brother was done quite a while ago as was the one of Paul...there are others I'm digging out of packed away things as I continue the move from SE Kansas to Ca..lots of memories and old skeletons are tumbling out of unexpected places!!!
Excellent hub, I love those covers! I used to collect Heavy Metal magazine years ago, and still have a whole bunch in a box somewhere in the house.
I bought the two movies on DVD too.
Voted Up and Awesome.
I'll have to admit that i never saw these magazines before but the art work on the covers are magnificent. I especially liked the one with Elvis playing his guitar. You always present great articles, unique and unusual. Thank you.
This part of "The Universe" is completely unknown to me - I admit my ignorance.
Art is art, no matter what kind - the manifestation of creativity. "Heavy Metal" is certainly not me, though.
I loved your opening for this article - a very personal touch... I, for the most part, don't remember my "firsts".
There was nothing under my mattress... but at certain point I started paying attention to Greek male statues and the fact that they were bothering me (I am not going to elaborate). Consider Ancient Art Adult (adult content).
I wonder what the appeal is with this kind of Art. The fact that it is adult? Or our eternal need for fairy tales (tails & trails), the longing for the fantasy?
Female version of Adult Content - Fashion Magazines - "I want to be like her".
Thank you for the warning; however, I am not looking forward to searching under the mattress of the young gentleman in my care. Though it is coming (I mean the treasures, not necessarily searching).
Danielism:
"Oooh, you are so sexy!"
[I am trying to ignore such compliments].
His version "Adult Art" - pants down and taking pictures - rear end for now. And yesterday we were treated to such a view that it is better discussed behind closed doors in a very small circle of people (the fewer the better). Life.
Interesting Review A.A....and I guess there's always room for one more Magazine to satisfy a certain portion in the Adult World, and probably a need as well.
"Will be?" After all my superb effort (given that I had a terrible case of food poisoning that threatened the whole Birthday Fun idea) and expense, his partying words today were: "Get a job, I don't want you in the house, I want to be alone." As if he does not do everything he wants now.
So, I am contemplating the appropriate strategy - ...
The Art - I hope you did not take my words as judgment. The goal of art is the artist's self-expression. Pleasing the audience can be considered a goal, but if it is achieved - then it becomes a commercial art (a money-making machine, a milking cow), if it doesn't achieve the goal of pleasing anyone or bringing cash home, then it is still Art, but worthless.
The same situation with Daniel - his remarks are the pinnacle of rudeness, but I'd rather know what he really thinks than hear what he thinks I want to hear.
I had the same sentiments about my parents - I enjoyed the solitude. I wanted to have siblings, but as it turned out to be - it was better to be the only child.
If this magazine and this Art gives you pleasure than there is no judgement. It is all too subjective. Sometimes I have the urge to remove/delete/destroy old pictures, but after some time, I am glad that I haven't. I see them in a different light. Besides, there is such thing as acquired taste.
So, in short, I was not judging either your taste or the Art itself. I was glad to learn something new. I hope I make sense (I have a nagging felling that I don't).
Augustine a fantastic article. I missed out on the mag but feel like I've caught up on it here. Did catch the movie in those days though, that animation was a break-through. The artists were ecstatic creating it instead of all the goody-kiddie stuff. Can't wait for your story n pics on it. Oughta be outta-sight!
Augustine, thank you for your concern and the suggestion. I don't think Daniel is spoiled, I would say he is a deprived child - deprived of a proper upbringing and care. What is on the surface is not what it is and I made a mistake confusing "the masks" he puts on to disguise his pain and disappointment with his real persona. It is not so easy to know people. My "toughness" is nothing compared with my ex's "attitude" (I hate this word, but I used it for the lack of a better one), but I realized that it was counterproductive. Daniel shares less, withdraws more and that it the end of our "discipline". I am trying to open lines of communication and discover "what is" and "who he is" and for that I need his genuine feedback, his thoughts being expressed without fear of judgment.
You don't know me well enough, but a lot of people who have "the privilege" to deal with me, say that they feel being judged by me. For Daniel, it may come even more strongly than for adults. He is always afraid and covers up. So, being tough is not the answer.
Other than that, I am trying to change my perception of things should be. Then I might come up with something that will work for him and for the both of us. As for this Dad ("the big fat meanie, the one who always screams" - how is that for a description?) - there is nothing I can do. If I could, I would have been married still. Maybe the remark that Daniel made was signalling "the transition" from one home to another - mental preparation of sorts.
We don't call each other when he is there. I think it goes along the same lines when deployed soldiers feel worse after talking to relatives on the phone - it makes them realize that they cannot breach the distance, it makes the longing more acute.
I am not an expert in rearing children, especially when parents are divorced and I don't consider Daniel to be an easy-going child, but it might very well be that it is I who know nothing and it is completely my fault in everything that is wrong with him.
So, I don't know... All I can do is remain open-minded and continue the process of exploration...
Not my cup of tea but very well written and informative.
..still waiting for strange album covers number four - but I gotta say this will certainly keep me happy until then - because quite simply by throwing me another curve ball - I just gotta boast to the Facebook crowd with a direct link back here - this is the greatest hub of all time
lake erie time 5:12am, home after work to some beers and some loud tunes and enjoy this 'mother' of a hub - can't say the f word - lol - or else they may think I'm some kind of hubheathen! lol
epi, does "f" stand for facebook?? LOL, "St" Mar!
AAZ, You are so cool to go from Mr Sexy Voice to a "Wild and Crazy" hub like this! There is nothing like a little variety in life! Am I nerdy to say the only heavy metal I followed was KISS? I thought this was UP & ABI, mar.
Augustine, do you have sexy voice? Where have I been?
Yes, he does!!
I should have qualified this....Augustine speaks on several of his hubs...you must peruse them to find which ones and, in doing so, will also enjoy his other works w/out voice over. All wonderful. (Hint: My Beautiful Star...) is one; readers, you must find the other. K
Thank you, Kathy - Augustine, your rating is going up...
However, I am not going to track you down - I never chase men - I prefer it to be the other way around - and when we start talking "sexy" anything, I am afraid we can go in the direction ... given us being completely irresistible...
Ah, ha! Men and their wild fantasies!!! Very interesting material A.A.....You have a keen sense to find the bizarre and extraordinaire material...Terrific!!! You are a natural at reviews!!! Thanks so much for this wonderful and risque hub,
MM

Oh and by the way, my curiousity got the better of me, so I went and had a listen to your voice after reading the comments above! Umm! very nice!
I have neevr read this mag either but that didn't stop me from enjoying this review. Thank you for sharing this gem which ihave to vote up.

Told you, a Taurus!
I never realized we are both Dogs. But it is not a good thing - two dogs together (my ex was a Taurus, a Dog and you are one day apart in your birthdays.)
However,
about August(ine):
==========================
I know I am august,
I do not trouble my spirit to vindicate itself or be understood,
I see that the elementary laws never apologize,
(I reckon I behave no prouder than the level I plant my house by,
after all.)
I exist as I am, that is enough,
If no other in the world be aware I sit content,
And if each and all be aware I sit content.
Walt Whitman
==========================
We are all august (whether it is August or not and someone with the initial "S" forgot to buy the "S"eptember metropass) and celebrating piece and friendship.
The most exciting woman on earth (even if it is not me, I am grabbing the title before anyone else has the chance) is creating another vision. Hallucination more like.
My best regards to both of you.
....I beg to differ my dear you are simply the most exciting woman ANYWHERE you go - Hubland just wouldn't be the same without you - does Mister Z know that you and I are carrying on here when he's not around - lol lol
lake erie time 10:22pm listening to Donovan's Season of the Witch - it's quite a 'jam' song .......George Jones, earlier, and now for some Muddy Waters .....
Yes, Colin, especially when I throw heavy objects at Water Bearers!
I am listening to Miguel Saez "Mala Mujer" - "Bad Woman" &
Rey Ruiz "Ay Mujer Fenomenal" (A phenomenal woman)
- pick one.
Back to having visions...
Thanks goodness my son never found this magazine. Ok, let me re-phrase that...thank goodness I never found out if my son has found this magazine. I thought Heavy Metal was only a movie. I didn't realize it had its own series complete with mags, movies, and music. Interesting look at its history. Thanks!
Augustine, I am not vicious. And I hate conflicts. As far as understanding goes - I am very understanding. Maybe not too well-mannered, but good-hearted. I did not want to hurt, I wanted to be heard, that is all.
....lol lol lol lol lol ...well Mister Z - great minds think alike - I was literally just about to visit you at 1:49am my time sunday morning now and here you beat me to it at my Genghis Khan piece - lol lol - hey buddy I wish you could hang out with me for a night I just picked up a SMITHS dvd live of them performing live in Madrid, Spain in 1985 .... it's an excellent production with great sound - hope everything is good with you - always appreciate your visits, comments, intelligence and world class wit.
I heard never heard about this magazine before. But thanks for share with us. Have a good day!
AA Zavala: Thank you for the fascinating, intelligent summary of a ground-breaking magazine and its equally pioneering art. The examples and explanations are most helpful. It is a demanding but insightful art form since the artist must recognize and embellish the hallmark traits of the individuals in question. It is therefore impressive that the magazine and the art form have managed to sustain the initial creative momentum.
Voted up, etc.,
Derdriu
P.S. How charming that you remember your first crayon drawing! What were the colors and the subject?
Would you be amazed if I told you Cheeky Girl's Grandad used to get this magazine? LOL. I spent half of a wet rainy sunday in their old house, buried deep in that strip of Ranxerox... ow wow it was raunchy as hell, and am I going mad or is Terminator just so unbelievably similar to this? I could never look at a photocopier the same way again. Heh. The artist has a french sounding name. The things that happened to the girl were very weird, and having a loyal protector to save her and beat the bad guys was just heaven to me.
Um... maybe I have issues... no not Heavy Metal ones... the other kinds... LOL.
Anyway. I love this Hub, Augustine. Very stylish and risque. (It is a long way from Sponge Bob Squarepants.)
...hello Augustine - sending you best wishes and good energy from cold lake erie tonight where the furnace and a hot water bottle are my lovers - lol - love this hub immmensely and the time and care you put into it - will post this once again to my Facebook page with a direct link back here so I can say that I did something righteous tonight ...with my buddy - tell me what are you listening to lately? I was groovin' with the Pirate Radio soundtrack from the film of the same name - check it out on You Tube - you will love it.
lake erie time 1:29am
Damn Good Bro!!
Yike!!..those Wonder woman kind of muscules are still in my retina..Lol!
LORD
This is the first time I've come across Heavy Metal Magazine and it was VERY interesting. I would read the magazine right now if I had one in front of me! The stories and the art are amazing. This hub must've taken you ages to research and write - it's very well put together.
I love Heavy Metal magazine. And hoping they make the third movie. It'll be great. The first one was awesome. I didn't like the second as much, though. Great hub and some great art!
Augustine, I have skipped all the comments, because I don't want them to influence my opinion of this hub of yours.
For the 1st time in my life I've read an article in this genre with great interest... through your eyes. In the past I had ignored this, and even science fiction movies - it did not trigger my sense of love and romance.
But today I could see for the fist time so many true stories in the graphics - the woman in the arms of a robot... on the back of a dolphin... Oh, and I love the one of the woman who had managed to chain an eagle... I feel like writing poems and stories on these themes.
I must admit, you have finally open my eyes for this genre; you've broken my glasses of prejudice. You should feel proud of yourself; a person who wants to change my mind, needs a lot more than average of what it takes to change a mind. You do have an extra-ordinary talent to shift minds and to inspire people do to things they've never tried before.
I feel kind of exited, like one who has entered a new world to be discovered. Time, a lack of time to do what I would like to do, is the only spanner in my works.
Thanks again and take care!
It was as personal to those that discovered it and dug it as their Prog Rock. (YES, King Crimson, etc.) All those ones (mainly guys) that stumbled over an issue and had an ounce of creativity inside them, fell for it head over heels. Next to Mad, this was one of my first subscribed publication.
Now my teenage artzy daughter has turned me on to High Fructose...this genrations Heavy Metal. The beat goes on!!!

Never read this magazine but I enjoyed reading your review of it. The Special Rock issue with Elvis on the cover would have been my taste.
